Where the method comes from
The Fast Excel Development Method
Since 2000, production-scheduling.com has taught the Fast Excel Development Method: a way for operations people to build their own planning and scheduling tools in Excel, quickly. It began with production scheduling and grew to cover much of supply chain planning.
One idea has carried through all of it: the people who run manufacturing and supply chains can build the planning tools they need, and should own them, without waiting for enterprise software.
What carries on, and what is new
The speed carries on, and so does the conviction that a planning tool belongs to the people who plan with it.
What is new is the structure that lets a tool keep growing: blocks that each have an input, a logic step and an output; a data and logic contract on every block; tests that check both every time the tool runs; and a path for a block to change form, from formulas to Power Query or Python, without the rest of the tool noticing. The Fast Excel Development Method remains one of the forms a tool can take, with or without macros.
Earlier versions of this site described the approach as no-code. The method now is about owning the logic, in whatever form suits it.
